The programs offered at East Metro Youth Services (EMYS) are voluntary. The decision to participate is yours. We will not do anything without your knowledge and consent. Adolescents and young adults can request and receive counselling on their own, but parental involvement is always encouraged. To access any of our services, call our main number and ask to speak to an Access worker. Dial 416-438-3697.
Our Access workers receive calls directly from youth and parents. They also receive referrals from schools, hospitals, correctional services, family physicians, Children’s Aid Societies etc.
The Access worker will ask you questions in order to better understand your situation and needs. The Access worker will also provide telephone support during times of crisis and refer the client to the appropriate East Metro Youth Services program.
If another organization seems more appropriate, the Access worker will make a recommendation and help you connect to that other organization.
If you are a parent or a youth and an EMYS service seems appropriate for you, the Access worker will then interview you further. This is usually done over the telephone, but if you’d prefer to do it in person, that can also be arranged.
The interviews are standardized interviews conducted at all children’s mental health centres. They help us to get a better and more detailed sense of your situation.
The youth interview takes about ten minutes. The parent interview takes about half an hour.
If you are a youth, you don’t have to involve your parents in your treatment at EMYS. However, we encourage you to do so. Please turn to the “Things You Need to Know” section of this website for information about confidentiality and consent.
Depending on the program that you need, the Access worker will then either make an appointment for you or put you on the waiting list.
